by Stephenie Meyer

Good student. Responsible. Considerate. Unremarkable. Bella Swan has been quietly and routinely taking care of herself and her mom for years. She has been just one of hundreds of girls attending her sunny metropolitan high school, no boyfriend, no drama, no unfinished homework. When Bella's mom remarries a younger man, Bella thinks nothing of putting her own comfort aside and uprooting herself to spend her senior year with her father so that her mom is able to travel with her new husband.

The incessant rain and gloom of living at her dad's house in Forks, Washington promises to try sun-soaked Bella's resolve to make the best of her decision. Against the odds, she finds herself enjoying her new life. She has her own truck, a gift from her dad who is the local police chief, and suddenly she is the bell of ball at her new school, someone new and exotic entering a community where everyone has known everyone else all their lives.

Good student: Bella just wants to fit in even though her new classes are covering material she's already learned. Responsible: Bella gets her own breakfast and cooks her father's supper, a home comfort he has never had on his own. Considerate: Bella calls her mom to give her updates and to assure her that everything is going well.

Unremarkable: Not any more, not since Bella walks into her science class and finds herself sitting beside Edward...Edward with his gorgeous face, shifting topaz eyes, designer clothes, and intoxicating scent...Edward with his devastating smile and beautiful, mysterious family who live secluded from the local community in the woods outside of town...Edward who finds the unremarkable Bella powerfully and irresistibly attractive, trying and failing to deny his growing feelings for her...Edward who is a vampire, immortal, and ultimately unable to stop himself from allowing Bella to fall deeply in love with him.

Edward and Bella's passion for each other leads Bella to abandon her responsible, good girl habits. She lies to her parents, pushes away her new friends, turns down dates with other guys, and ultimately makes the fateful decision to fully enter Edward's world, a world where the love between a human girl and a vampire is not only remarkable but also terrifyingly dangerous.
